Become the kind of support you wish every family could access.
Doula work is about more than knowing what happens during labor. It calls for listening, communication, practical knowledge, thoughtful boundaries, and the ability to support people without taking over their experience. SunshineFLO is developing doula education opportunities that combine community building, personal reflection, foundational knowledge, practical skill development, and continued mentorship.
We want learners to build a strong foundation for supporting families with compassion, respect, and clarity about their role.
Our approach to doula learning
Begin with community
Create opportunities for learners to build relationships, establish shared expectations, reflect on their motivations, and practice respectful communication.
Learn the foundations
Explore pregnancy, labor, birth, postpartum adjustment, newborn transition, family support, and the role of the doula.
Practice the skills
Develop communication, comfort-support, resource navigation, reflective listening, and collaborative care skills through guided exercises and scenarios.
Understand the whole person
Discuss emotional well-being, trauma-informed approaches, substance use, mental health awareness, cultural humility, family circumstances, and referral pathways.
Know your scope
Learn how to distinguish non-medical doula support from clinical responsibilities, recognize when to refer, protect confidentiality, and communicate appropriately with healthcare teams.
Grow through mentorship
Build opportunities for reflection, case discussion, continued learning, and feedback as participants develop their practice. We conduct rigorous evaluations that illuminate inefficiencies and establish a definitive baseline for improvement. Our team applies a systematic series of phases, ensuring each engagement advances logically from initial insight to final evaluation while maintaining full transparency.
